Earth day is quickly approaching and we want to do our part by spreading awareness and giving you some tips for going Green that will also help you save money. Recycling is one way to save the environment, but there are many other things you can do. And, what better way is there to save the planet than while saving money?
Conserve energy You can lower your electricity bill and conserve energy by setting your thermostat a few degrees lower in winter and a few degrees higher in summer. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. Unplug appliances that you aren’t using, or use a smart power strip. A smart power strip senses when appliances are off and cuts the vampire energy usage. When it’s possible, wash your clothes in cold water. This will save the 85 percent of energy needed to heat the water for each wash. Instead of using a dryer, use a drying rack. Conserve water Take shorter showers and use a low-flow showerhead. Have your landlord install faucet aerators on each faucet. Both the low-head showerheads and faucet aerators are inexpensive and will conserve large quantities of water. Save gas Try carpooling to work or if it’s not too far, walk to work. Use a water filter Don’t buy bottled water, which is expensive and also contributes large amounts of plastic waste to our environment. Buy a filter to purify your tap water. Use an aluminum reusable water bottle when you travel or while you’re at work. Borrow items instead of buying them When you read a book, you only read it once and then you’re done with it. Instead of buying books that kill trees, start checking them out at your local library. If you’re good friends with your neighbors, borrow appliances and power tools when you need them. Buy in bulk When you buy food and household products in bulk, you help save on packaging waste. Eliminate toxic chemicals Wear more clothes that don’t require dry-cleaning to help cut toxic chemical waste. Spend a little more to buy products that will last longer. Recycle electronics E-waste has mercury and other chemicals that are toxic. Keep electronics as long as you can or donate them when you’re ready for a new one. Recycle them when they break. Making your own cleaning products helps to save on toxic chemical waste and will also save you money. In Monday’s blog, we’ll give you some recipes to make great environment-friendly cleaning products.
