{{ post.title }}

In celebration of Earth Day, today, we want to continue our Wednesday blog with cleaning supply recipes and ideas.  Go Green when you clean, by helping to prevent toxic chemical waste.   You’ll need the following supplies to make your own cleaning products:

  • Washing soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Cornstarch
  • Essential Oils
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Baking soda
  • Liquid unscented soap
  • Lemon juice or lemons
  • Borax
  • White vinegar

All-purpose cleaner can be made by mixing 2 teaspoons borax, ¼ cup baking soda, ½ cup vinegar and 1/3 gallon of water.  Use this to remove water deposit stains in showers, kitchen and bathroom chrome fixtures, windows, and mirrors. The microfiber cleaning cloths are designed to trap and penetrate dirt, so you can use them with or without cleaning solutions.  They can last your for years if you buy quality made microfiber cloths. Air fresheners can be made in a variety of ways.  You can leave small bowls around your house filled with baking soda or vinegar and lemon juice.  You can filter your air and remove odors with indoor plants.  To prevent cooking odors, you can simmer 1 tablespoon vinegar with 1 cup water while you’re cooking. Grind lemon slices in your garbage disposal to freshen your kitchen.  Simmer water and cinnamon on your stove top.  Place fragrant dried herbs and flower all over your home.  Dip cotton balls into essential oils and hide them in each room in your home.  You can also use fragranced cotton balls for a car air freshener. To clean mold and mildew, use 1 equal part of a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with 2 equal parts water, and let it soak for one hour before you rinse it. For carpet cleaners, mix ¼ cup borax, ¼ cup salt, and ¼ cup vinegar to make a heavy duty cleaner, which soaks for a few hours before you vacuum.  For carpet stains, mix equal parts water and vinegar and let it sit for 10 minutes before you vacuum.  For grease stains, sprinkle corn starch and let it absorb for 15 to 30 minutes before you vacuum. To make dishwashing detergent, mix equal parts borax with washing soda.  If you have hard water, add more washing soda.  To make dishwashing soap, use unscented liquid soap and add 2 or 3 tablespoons of vinegar for tougher jobs. To make a disinfectant, mix ¼ teaspoon castile soap, 4 tablespoons vinegar, 2 tablespoons borax with 3 cups of hot water.
