According to U-Haul, for the fourth year in a row the number one destination last year for people moving with a U-Haul truck was Houston. For drivers who rented a U-Haul truck one way, Houston was the main endpoint, according to U-Haul International’s Migration Trend Report for 2012. Every city in the country regardless of size is considered in the survey. Among the top 10 cities where people move, San Antonio ranked number five and Austin ranked number six.
There were more than 1.6 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions used in the recent 12 month period to determine the top 50 US destinations for relocation. Although the company did not survey U-Haul trucks and trailers rented for one-way trips to Houston, the transaction is an indicator of a change in residence according to U-Haul spokeswoman, Joanne Fried. So why are so many people relocating to Houston and Austin? In recent news Houston has been ranked as the one of the top entrepreneur-friendly cities as well as well as one of the top cities to work in. Austin has also been ranked one of the top entrepreneur- friendly cities and one of the top cities to work in. Houston’s job market has been booming and will continue to improve. The energy sector, medical center and the Port of Houston are all driving the employment boom. At present, there is 3.9 million square feet of office space being constructed in Houston. More than 90% of this is on the west side and in a suburb north of Houston, The Woodlands. In the Woodlands, both Exxon and Anadarko are building large complexes. Exxon’s 385-acre complex will be finished in 2014 and will bring more than 10,000 new jobs to Houston. And, Anadarko is building a 197,000-square foot, 31 story office building. Austin’s job market boom can be attributed to large businesses relocating to the city, the existing high-tech industry, and the coming medical school at the University of Texas. In addition Apple and Samsung have recently committed to increasing their presence. Apple is expected to double its workforce in a few years from its current 3,500 employees. In addition, a local economist, Angelos Angelou, forecasts that 28,000 new jobs will be added in 2013 and another 30,000 new jobs in 2014. He claims his projections are on the conservative side. Angelou’s predictions are based on Austin’s unique entrepreneurships, real estate, technology, and entertainment. With so many businesses relocating to both Austin and Houston along with the new jobs that will be opening soon, it’s no wonder that they’re the top relocation destinations.
